From dramatic coastal drives and pristine beaches to iconic national parks and roaring waterfalls, the trip combined wildlife encounters, botanical beauty, historic sites, and genuine local culture. Each image represents a place I still find myself daydreaming about.
In Cape Town, the contrasts are vivid: sweeping ocean views from Chapman’s Peak Drive, the flat-topped silhouette of Table Mountain, and the colorful changing rooms at Muizenberg Beach. I remember walking through the University of Cape Town’s campus, past Jameson Hall and the stone halls that feel both academic and timeless. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was an unexpected oasis of fynbos and cultivated flowers, a reminder of how diverse South Africa’s plant life is.
The coastline offered endless discovery. Llandudno and Noordhoek beaches gave us quiet mornings and dramatic rock formations to climb. Boulders Beach surprises visitors with its resident penguin colony, a charming sight that felt like a secret tucked between massive granite boulders. The Cape of Good Hope and the famous sign there are tourist highlights for good reason—big skies, roaming seabirds, and the sense of standing at a dramatic meeting point of ocean currents.
Groot Constantia provided a gentler, historic side of the region: vineyards and a sense of old-world charm near the city. Evenings at local stadiums delivered energy and passion; I still remember the excitement and noise at a soccer match beneath the watchful silhouette of the mountains.
Wildlife was a continuous thread through the trip. At Inverdoorn we watched giraffes and rhinos move through wide, open enclosures with a calmness that felt restorative. On the Zambezi River, slow boat rides offered birdlife and peaceful reflections, followed by the surreal sight of monkeys attempting to snatch a cocktail at the Royal Livingstone — a small, hilarious reminder that wild animals can be bold and curious.
Victoria Falls was an unforgettable highlight. Standing at the edge and looking toward Devil’s Pool, the sheer power and mist of the falls erase the idea of ordinary scale. The nearby Boab tree in Zimbabwe and the welcome signs along the border were small cultural notes that framed the natural spectacle. The view from above and the roar below stayed with me long after I left the falls behind.
Some moments were personal and unexpected: meeting a renowned golfer by chance on a layover in New York before heading to Cape Town, or sharing a simple picnic while watching a cricket match with Devil’s Peak in the background. These encounters, big and small, stitched the trip together into something richer than a list of sights. I left with a deeper appreciation for southern Africa’s landscapes, wildlife, and warm hospitality.
I’ll miss this place more than I can say. For now, I carry the memories—images of beaches, mountains, wildlife, and waterfalls—until the next adventure. See you tomorrow, USA!
