What you’ll need
Below is a quick look at the primary ingredients that define this glowing green smoothie.

- Lacinato kale (also called dinosaur, Tuscan kale, or cavolo nero) has a gentle texture compared with curly kale, which makes it easier to blend smoothly. If you don’t have lacinato, baby spinach is an excellent substitute for a milder flavor.
- Frozen banana gives the smoothie a thick, dreamy consistency. Overripe bananas freeze well: peel, slice, and store in a sealed bag for easy use later.
- Frozen pineapple adds bright tropical sweetness and helps chill the drink. Use store-bought frozen pineapple or freeze fresh diced pineapple on a sheet pan before transferring to a container.
- Hass avocado contributes rich creaminess and healthy fats. Use a ripe avocado for the smoothest texture.

A note on nutrition
Smoothie preferences vary widely. This recipe is balanced for flavor and texture, but you can easily tweak it to match your nutrition goals. Common adjustments include:
- Changing the liquid (water, coconut water, plant milk)
- Adding a scoop of your preferred protein powder
- Omitting higher-sugar ingredients if you prefer a lower-sugar option
How to make it
Here’s a brief overview of the process. Full ingredient amounts and step-by-step instructions are included in the recipe section below.

- Add the pineapple, banana, kale, and avocado to the blender.
- Pour in the water or coconut water and the lime juice.
- Cover and blend on high until perfectly smooth and creamy. If using a regular blender, blend in stages as described below.
- Pour into a glass and serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
Expert tips and FAQs
Kale-based smoothies are easiest in a high-speed blender such as a Vitamix or Blendtec, which create an ultra-smooth texture. You can still use a regular blender, but plan to blend in two stages: first blend the liquid with the greens and avocado until the greens are broken down, then add the frozen fruit and blend until smooth.
Can I make this in advance?
Smoothies are best right after blending. If you must prepare ahead, keep the smoothie cold: store it in the freezer for up to an hour or in an insulated, lidded container in the refrigerator overnight. Re-blend briefly if the texture separates.

Ingredients
- 1 cup (170 g) frozen pineapple chunks
- 1 medium frozen banana (about 110 g after peeling), sliced
- 1/2 cup (30 g) tightly packed, finely chopped lacinato kale pieces (stems removed)
- Flesh of 1/2 ripe Hass avocado (about 60 g), diced
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) water or coconut water
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
Instructions
In a high-speed blender
- Place all ingredients in the blender.
- Blend on high until perfectly smooth and creamy.
- Pour into a glass and serve immediately.
In a regular blender
- Begin by adding the water or coconut water, lime juice, avocado, and a portion of the pineapple to the blender.
- Start on medium-low and gradually increase speed until the mixture is smooth.
- You may need to stop occasionally to press ingredients toward the blades; resume blending as needed.
- Add the remaining pineapple, banana, and kale and continue blending until smooth and creamy.
- Pour into a glass and serve right away.
Notes
- Lacinato kale blends more easily than curly kale. If you prefer, substitute baby spinach for a milder taste.
- Freeze overripe bananas by peeling and slicing them into a sealed bag; they keep well for months and make a thicker, colder smoothie.
- Frozen pineapple is convenient and keeps the drink chilled; you can freeze diced fresh pineapple on a sheet pan before storing it in a container.
- Ripe Hass avocado provides creaminess and healthy fats. Choose an avocado that yields slightly to gentle pressure for the best texture.
- Store any leftovers cold and re-blend briefly if separation occurs. For best flavor and texture, drink shortly after blending.
